"But look outside, somebody's bombs are falling..." (Ain't it Fine, by Utah Phillips)
“I saw the snares of the Devil spread on all the earth.
And I groaned, saying, ‘Who can escape such snares?’
And I heard a voice saying to me, ‘Humility.’”
-St Anthony the Great
AIN'T IT FINE (By UTAH PHILLIPS)
Ain't it fine to have our little babes around us?
Our old TV and a coffee pot
And all of the other things we've got
All safe and alone with no one there to hound us
New shingle roof, no little rain can drowned us
We've never seen a lawn so green
And we cut it all with a big machine
And that's alright, our yard and fence surround us
Ain't it fine to have so much to hang on to?
They cash our checks at the grocery store
We don't have to know who lives next door
We don't have to think if we don't want to
Ain't it fine to know our country is the best?
The other people may think and read
We know that all we really need is the Bible
And the Reader's Digest
Look outside somebody's bombs are falling
And as they bend and break the sky
We haven't time to wonder why
The last thing we hear, our little babes are calling
Ain't it fine to have our little babes around us?
Our old TV and a coffee pot
And all of the other things we've got
All safe and alone with no one there to hound us

"Come, my little son" AKA England's Motorway (Ewan MacColl, Luke Kelly)
Переглядів 2522 місяці тому
One of my favorite songs sung by Luke Kelly. I know MacColl wrote it, and for that he deserves thanks from all of us folksingers today, and he has a well-derserved place in the cloud of witnesses from which he hopefully is enjoying our humble renditions of his many classics. From what I have read, MacColl wrote it for "Song Of The Road" (1958), the BBC Radio Ballad dedicated to the workers who ...
More Folk Music in the Forest: "The Mountain" by Derroll Adams
Переглядів 1223 місяці тому
Another spell in the forest near our home, north of Seoul. This is one of my favorite songs ever, from any time, place, or genre. Derroll Adams was a profoundly talented songwriter and banjoist and this is one of his gems. I've listened to it countless times, and it still never fails to move me. It moves me more like a classic religious text than a song, though. Not because it isn't a wonderful...
Folk Music in the Forest, with Birds
Переглядів 1853 місяці тому
A few folk songs strung together mostly on a whim. Pretty Saro, along with bits of Arirang, Doraji, Island Home Baby (Korean folk classics), and a couple of verses from The Lone Wild Bird hymn (with my melody). In a forest on a mountain north of Seoul. Late May, 2024.
Bravest Fire (original melody and adaptation of hymn lyrics by Hal Hopson)

Here's another one of my "oldies". Back in, I think, around 2005, I started playing around with this melody. A while later, to my joy I found that it seemed to fit well with these lyrics, which belong to a popular hymn based on one of my favorite scripture passages, 1 Corinthians 13. St. Paul said, if you don't have love, none of the rest matters. Not your spiritual gifts. Not your fiery denunc...
Be Thou My Vision (Rehearsal at Baekusaeng)

A live one-off take of a favorite hymn, from a recorded set of 5 songs that will be shared later, in more produced and mixed fashion. From Last weekend's folknight at @baekusaeng, 4/28/2024. The show was shared with one of my heroes, Ahyeon activist and legendary indie artist, Amature Amplifier (aka Yamagata Tweakster). Both of us recorded live "sessions" with three cameras and Baekusaeng audio...
Root of Jesse ("When the trees are leveled, and the mountains crumbled...") - reflection and song

Well, here's another song from the vaults. (song starts about 1:55) It may not be a song that floats your boat. You may even hate it. Fine by me. There are plenty of songs out there. But I'd thought I'd share it here since I was enjoying revisiting it today. And, at least to me, it seemed like it had some important even good things to say about a lot of what we currently relate to as reality. I...
Doubting Castle (based on a passage from Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress)
Переглядів 3084 місяці тому
Here's one of my oldest songs. It's meant to be a folk song tribute to and retelling of one of the most famous and moving passages in John Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress where Christian and Hopeful take a bit of a shortcut from their journey's clear but difficult path, only to be captured by Giant Despair, and tortured mercilessly, left to languish in the dark Dungeon of Despair below Doubting Cas...
"GO AWAY": Seth Mountain 이산 plays 4 songs at DOTAM FILM FESTIVAL (Eulji Space, Seoul KR, 4.6.2024)

Many thanks to @daehanmindecline for inviting me to join the after party of the Dotam Film Festival at @euljispace last weekend. DOTAM featured an afternoon full of short films and documentaries focused on the "leftover" lives and landscapes ravaged and forgotten by the forces of Progress (especially "redevelopment" schemes) in Korea. It was a painful, beautiful, and at times prophetic testimon...
No More Wicked Man!

This song is based of of one of Stephen Crane's poems in his magisterial, deeply poignant and unsettling book of verse, The Black Riders, published in 1895. Crane is most famous for his book, The Red Badge of Courage, which many consider the first great American anti-war novel. His work explored the madness of war, the violence of civilization, and the search for human meaning in a world increa...

a reflection on love, roots, and making a home in the wasteland. for album version: sethmartinandthemenders.bandcamp.com/track/wind-blown-river-run After all the wind has blown After all the birds have flown After all the wind has blown And your friends have all gone home And you’re alone After all the rivers run After all the songs been sung After all the rivers run After every battle’s won Wh...
Brother Sun & Sister Moon (Donovan cover)

Another Sunday song, as the early Spring rain pours outside. While I love many of his songs, especially his brilliant and timeless "Colours" this is my favorite from the "icon of flower power" Donovan. This is one of the many gorgeous ballads he wrote for the classic hippy-style movie of the life of Saint Francis (my favorite Saint, and one of my favorite films).
The Blackest Crow (traditional)

Had my guitar with me. Went on a little stroll before work, following the windy trails of Opae-San, north of Seoul. Signs of Spring everywhere, especially in the birdsong and the wonderful smell of the soil waking up beneath the dry leaves. To hear the album version of this tragic but beautiful ballad (recorded with my friends David Fuller and Jessa Campbell back in the pacific northwest nearly...
The Wind That Shakes the Barley (Irish Traditional--slow improvisational lament version)
Переглядів 1547 місяців тому
I sat within a valley green, I sat there with my true love, My sad heart strove the two between, The old love and the new love, - The old for her, the new that made Me think of Ireland dearly, While soft the wind blew down the glade And shook the golden barley 'Twas hard the woeful words to frame To break the ties that bound us 'Twas harder still to bear the shame Of foreign chains around us An...
